Tuesday’s Glorious Podcast

Friday, July 30th, 2010

It’s day one of Glorious Goodwood and what a wonderful week it is. Group races mingle with tip top handicaps, up and coming racehorses clash with battle hardened veterans and there’s more hard luck stories than a Las Vegas casino. It’s painful, but hopefully we can get the rub of the green and come out on top for the week.

To kick us off, Ross Brierley and David Kelner talk about nearly everything under the sun, Cornelius Lysaght goes through the card with a fine toothed comb and Declan O’Donoghue avoids Goodwood altogether and travels to Galway for day two of the finest Irish racing has to offer.

A top class week kicks off in style and you can catch it all on William Hill Radio.

Galway Festival: Irish Punters set to bet €70 million

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Bookmakers William Hill say around €70 million will be gambled by Irish punters on this year’s Galway Festival. That figure equates to an average of €10 million on each of the seven days of the festival.

The two feature races at Galway are the Tote Galway Plate on Wednesday and the Guinness Galway Hurdle on Thursday, and Irish bookies are expecting to see high turnover on both races.

Majestic Concorde, trained by the ‘King of Ballybrit’ – Dermot Weld, is the 6-1 favourite for the Galway Hurdle, whilst British raider Overturn is the current 7-1 market leader for the Galway Hurdle.

Hills are also betting on the Rooney Auctioneer-sponsored top jockey prizes, and the colour of the dress worn by the ‘best dressed lady’ – which will be presented on Thursday (Ladies Day).

Galway is the biggest betting event on the Irish racing calendar, and bookies are bracing themselves for another epic battle with the punters down in Ballybrit,” said William Hill’s Irish spokesman Tony Kenny.

Galway is known as the punters graveyard. However, it’ll be the bookies who’ll look like the walking dead if Dermot Weld has another bumper festival.

Majestic Concorde Heads Galway Plate Betting – 65 Acceptors At Forfeit Stage

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

A total of 65 horses have stood their ground at the latest forfeit stage for next Wednesday’s Tote Galway Plate at Ballybrit.

The Dermot Weld trained Majestic Concorde is now the 6-1 favourite for the race having been 8-1 earlier on in the week.

Other interesting movers over the last few days include the Willie Mullins trained Themoonandsixpence (12-1 to 8-1), Grand Slam Hero (12-1 to 10-1) and Nicanor (25-1 to 20-1).

Hills spokesman Tony Kenny stated ‘Majestic Concorde and Themoonandsixpence have been the two best backed horses in the race’.

‘However, both seem to perform better on a sound surface, and with the ground currently soft – we could see a real shake-up in the market if the ground remains the same or gets worse.’
