Again wins Irish 1,000 Guineas
Trainer David Wachman claimed the first Classics title of his career on Sunday as Again made the most of soft conditions at the Curragh to win the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
Antepost favourite Lahaleeb handled the heavy ground at the Curragh admirably, however Again’s mastery of the conditions allowed her to steal in front Mick Channon’s entry. John Gosden landed third place with Oh Goodness Me.
“It is great to win my first Classic. She has always been a nice horse and I am lucky to have her,” Wachman was quoted as saying by the BBC after the race. “My biggest worry was that she had not had a run whereas most of the others had, and with those conditions the race would turn into a real test.”
“We did not run her at Newmarket because of the very quick ground and we have ended up with very slow ground at the Curragh. I thought the lack of a run showed in the last 100 yards, but Johnny always thought she was going to win from a furlong and a half out. It turned into a slog but she stayed well.”
“She is in everything and has all sorts of options. Epsom is only 12 days away, but she is tough and she stays. There is also the Pretty Polly, the Irish Oaks and the Coronation Stakes to consider.”
Jockey Johnny Murtagh finished the race celebrating his second Classics win of the weekend, having claimed the Irish 2,000 Guineas onboard Mastercraftsman on Saturday.
