Halfway to Heaven secured Aidan O’Brien an impressive Irish Guineas double yesterday by winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
Halfway to Heaven, who has twice come close to claiming top honours in a Group One race, had to fight right to the finish in a race which almost saw 66-1 outsider Tuscan Evening score a massive upset.
Halfway to Heaven’s victory capped off a brilliant weekend for Aidan O’Brien, who watched Henrythenavigator romp to victory in the 2,000 Guineas on Saturday.
“She is a hardy lady and has come on for every run and I’m delighted with her,” O’Brien told the Associated Press. “Seamus gave her a great ride, her form was there and she is a very consistent filly. We knew they’d go a solid pace and the race was fair for everyone. We’ll have a look at the Coronation now as she gets the mile well.”
Tuscan Evening ended the day being demoted to 4th place after a steward’s enquiry adjudged that she had been responsible for interference during the race. The steward’s ruling saw two of Dermot Weld’s horses finish in the money, with Mad About You and Caribbean Sunset taking second and third place respectively.
Mick Channon’s race favourite, Nadooh, disappointed at the Irish 1,000 Guineas, finishing the race in seventh place after leading the markets at a price of 3/1. “She just didn’t finish it off. She came there well and I am disappointed by the outcome. We are now back to the drawing board,” Channon commented after the race.
